Hello everyone. I am a 51 y/o female recently diagnosed in July. My symptoms started when I was 42 and pregnant. Left foot drop. Over the years the foot drop has sort of come and gone. I attribute my running and cycling to masking the affects MMN has had on my legs. Just before turning 50, I noticed a weakening in my right leg. Could not lift up on my toes. This is “asymmetrical” to what was occurring in my left side. This weakness makes it difficult to walk and has slowly progressed over the last two years.
My symptoms vary with my menstrual cycle. Much worse just before and much better after. I did try taking birth control pills to see if that would help. It was horrible. I could barely walk. Hormones definitely impact my MMN. Initially, Neurologists thought I had endometriosis in the nerves in my lower back. MANY MRI’s later that was confirmed to not be the case. I had my first IVIG in July and responded very well. I was able to walk as long as I wanted to and run for the first time in over a year.
My EMG’s did not indicate conduction block. My blood tests were all normal. My spinal tap showed slightly elevated protein levels. For years I went to neurologists and got used to having test after test with the result coming back normal. Except for the EMGs… Only after responding to the IVIG treatment did I receive a diagnosis of MMN.
I am scheduled to have a second IVIG treatment soon. Has been delayed. Right now, I am scheduled for a two day infusion every two months. Time will tell as to whether this timeline will work for me.
I am curious to know how many women are out there with MMN symptoms in their legs.
